1. WHAT IS THE OFF ROAD SCHOOL, AND WHAT
IS TRAIL RIDING?
Our off road school is for those that are new to off road riding
(it is not a training camp for experienced enduro or motocross
riders). We teach you the basics of riding off road, and we specialise
in helping those that have little or no off road experience. Trail
riding is basically off-road riding on un-made roads and tracks
that are open to the public. As far as the law is concerned, you
are riding on public roads, although you don’t see many
other vehicles when you are on the trail riding because most routes
are not passable in your average car, truck, or whatever. You
need to know where you are going, because it is an offence to
ride on footpaths & bridleways, and when you are out on the
trail, a footpath that you are not allowed on can look just the
same as a byway that you are allowed on. The experience is very
different to road riding, but it is a huge amount of fun, and
because the speeds are low, and the ground softer than tarmac,
serious injuries are rare.
2. WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING WITH ME?
See REQUIREMENTS for details.
3. WHAT ABOUT FUEL?
If you are using one of our bikes, we take care of that (fuel
is included in the price you pay for the day).
4. IS FOOD & DRINK AVAILABLE?
Food and drink is not available on site at the off road school
but there is a Cafe 5 minutes away. For trail riding, food and
drink is available along the way. In both cases we recommend that
you bring snacks and water with you (see REQUIREMENTS for details),
but we do stop for lunch in any case.
5. HOW MUCH RIDING TIME WILL I GET?
It depends on the experience level and ability of the group on
the day, but it will be as much as you can cope with, and you
will be pretty exhausted at the end of the day! It can be as much
as 5 hours in the saddle for experienced riders, but less if you
are feeling tired… We tailor the day to your ability, and
you will get as much riding time as you want. See OFF ROAD SCHOOL
and/or SOUTHEAST TRAILS for details.
6. HOW DO I GET SOME TUITION OR ADVICE?
If you have not ridden off road before, we recommend that you
attend our off road school where you will get all the tuition
you need to get you started. When trail riding, it is not really
possible to give any in depth tuition because it would take up
too much time, but your guide will be happy to give you a few
pointers along the way… Just ask, it’s as easy as
that!
7. WHAT ABOUT INSURANCE?
You are not covered by our insurance for any damage you do to
yourself or others while riding (everyone rides at their own risk),
so we strongly recommend that you obtain personal accident &
liability insurance. Suitable insurance is available very cheaply
from Interzug Travel (Tel: 0870 333 1841 or book on line at trackcover.com).
Single day and annual multi-day policies are available, for both
UK-only and Europe-wide (including UK), and these also cover you
for trackdays, motorcycle touring, skiing and other similar high-risk
activities. Cover includes medical & emergency expenses including
rescue, personal accident, personal liability, activitiy equipment
& legal expenses.
8. WHAT ABOUT TYRES?
If you are using one of our bikes, we take care of all that (it’s
all included in the price you pay for the day).
9. WHAT IF I CRASH?
It goes without saying that safety is our priority at every event,
but incidents do happen, and we would be liars if we said they
didn’t. But serious incidents are much less frequent than
you might imagine, and the secret is to take a sensible and measured
approach to the day. Listen to what you are told in the briefing,
and try to put it into practice. Remember that there is only one
person controlling the throttle, and the throttle works both ways.
If you do fall off, bear in mind that the speeds you do off-road
are relatively low (20mph can feel really fast off-road), and
the ground is usually a lot softer than tarmac! For the most part,
the only injury will be to your pride (if your mates happen to
see you fall off that is… if not, keep quiet and they’ll
probably never know!).
10. ARE SPECTATORS AND PASSENGERS PERMITTED?
Non-riders cannot attend the actual trail riding days themselves
(because they would have to be riding a bike to keep up!), but
they are welcome to attend the start point at the beginning and
end of the day. Pillion passengers are not permitted whilst trail
riding. Spectators are welcome at our off road school up to a
maximum of 2 people per rider.
11. WHAT SORT OF RIDERS ATTEND THESE EVENTS?
Mostly it’s off road novices that attend our events, but
sometimes we get experienced riders who are looking to try out
a different bike and/or some new trails. Many of the riders that
attend have ridden on the road and/or racetrack for many years,
but that doesn’t count for much once they get off road…
Off road riding is very different to road/track riding, and in
that respect, it is a great leveller. We always try to make up
groups where everyone is of a similar level of experience, but
even if they are not, the days are still fun for all concerned,
and you can still ride at your own pace. See OFF ROAD SCHOOL and/or
SOUTHEAST TRAILS for more info.
12. HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE THERE IN EACH GROUP?
Off road schools are around 6 to 10 riders, and trail rides are
around 4 to 8 riders. See DATES & PRICES for more info.
13. WHAT IS THE ITINERARY FOR THE EVENT?
You will be sent a detailed itinerary along with you final instructions
prior to the event, but you can get an idea of a typical itinerary
by reading through the OFF ROAD SCHOOL and/or SOUTHEAST TRAILS.
14. WHERE AND WHEN ARE THESE EVENTS HELD?
See OFF ROAD SCHOOL and/or SOUTHEAST TRAILS for details.
15. HOW DO I BOOK, AND WHAT HAPPENS IF
I CANCEL?
See BOOKING and TERMS & CONDITIONS for details.
